  • Results - The Importance of Supplements

    Our July survey was completed by 141 respondents, of which 139 were female and two males. The age groups of respondents were split as below:

    18 – 25 @ 6%

    26 – 35 @ 23%

    36 – 45 @ 24%

    46 – 55 @ 31%

    56 – 65 @ 13%

    >66 @ 2%

    76% of respondents do take supplement as part of a daily routine building on the cumulative effect of these vitamins & minerals. 17% take internal supplements some of the time, when they remember or have a specific need to do so.

    Of these, 65% of respondents self-medicate, meaning they purchase what they think is required as and when needed. An impressive 30% of respondents purchase their supplements as prescribed by a Medical Practitioner. It is best to consult with a health care professional before purchasing and taking supplements. Different supplements can counter act each other, or build from strength to strength meaning if you are taking too many, or too little supplements you might just be wasting your money and not getting the benefits you are looking for.

    Some supplements should be taken with a meal, and others not. Make sure you know when is the best time and how to take your supplements, as some concentrated vitamins, minerals and nutraceuticals can cause nausea, dizziness or stomach aches if taken incorrectly.

    The most popular types of supplements taken by respondents include:

    26% Multivitamin & -mineral supplement;

    14% Specific individual vitamin / mineral;

    8% Probiotic supplement;

    7% Omega supplement;

    7% Collagen supplement;

    6% Immune boosting support; and

    33% take a variation of pregnancy, menopause, weight loss or stress management supportive supplements.

    46% of respondents indicated that they can feel a difference in their bodies when they stop taking their supplements, 32% feel different some of the time, and 16% don’t feel any different when they do, or don’t take supplements.

    It is also interesting to note that supplements not only affect and support your body for the specific reason you are taking them, but having a healthy body from the inside will have a direct effect on the quality and health of your skin, hair & nails.

    It is good to see that 66% of respondents first do research on the supplements they are purchasing. These individuals look at the ingredient origin, quantity and concentration before making an informed decision rather than shopping on price and promotion alone.

    It is always a good idea to not only look after yourself, but to assist family members (your spouse and children) to also take immune boosting supplements. 43% of respondents indicate that they do give their family members daily supplements.
